SanDisk’s making a big deal about slotMusic, even though it’s essentially DRM-free albums on a microSD card. It’s even wheeled out some cut-price MP3 players to make use of the format on the move. We took a close up look at them last night.
On the surface, it seems like a good idea. If you’re stuck without a laptop, or somewhere else you’re struggling to get online to download an album, you can buy a slotMusic album, slip it into a mobile phone or music player with a microSD card, and listen away.
The albums will be packaged in a “CD-size” box, so you can keep them on the shelf with the rest of your music at home, and will all come with a USB adapter, so you can shove the music into your PC when you get home too.
Some albums will even come with branded MP3 players, powered by a single AAA battery, but lacking a screen, so you’ll have to skip through an album by ear alone.
Neat idea, or a waste of time? After all, Wi-Fi’s everywhere, and there’s no microSD slot on an iPod.
