Remember Apricot Computers? Despite the fruity name, they were a household name (well, nearly) in British computing until the mid-90s when they were bought out by Mitsubishi. We’d completely forgotten all about them until Apricot made a surprise announcement in London last night – they’re back, with a tiny, netbook-shaped splash: the PicoBook Pro.
It’s pleasant-looking enough, with an 8.9 inch screen and even WiMax squeezed in there, and it’ll run Linux or Windows XP no probs. Apricot has opted for a 60 GB hard drive instead of solid state, giving you plenty of storage, though the 1.2 GHz chip doesn’t match the standard Atom found in most netbooks these days.
Truth be told, WiMax aside, we didn’t see anything about it you couldn’t get in one of the many, many Eee PCs in the same price band, but it’s nice to see Apricot back on the map. Rule Britannia!
