We’ve heard loads about Microsoft’s next-gen operating system, Windows 7. It’s understood to support multi-touch Surface touchscreens, voice control, ultra-deep integration with Windows Live and come with fewer add-on apps to make it faster than ever.
All that’s missing now is a name, and Microsoft just confirmed that it’ll be called…
Yep, Windows 7.
The Big M is sticking with the next-gen operating system’s code name for the official release.
“Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore ‘Windows 7′ just makes sense,” explained Mike Nash, vice president of Windows product management at Microsoft.
Detailing the reasons further, Nash said there was no need for a year in the name because “we do not ship new versions of Windows every year,” and added that dreaming up an “all-new ‘aspirational’ name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve.”
So XP and Vista were supposed to have been aspirational?
Nash says the new OS is “firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology.”
We think that’s a long-winded way of saying, “it’s basically a really, really big Vista upgrade… that you’ll pay more for, as we’ve bundled it as a whole new product.”
