In an interview with CVG, Shingo “Seabass” Takatsuka, creator of the Pro Evolution Soccer series (currently prepping the 2009 edition for release), has said he would use rival FIFA’s game engine if he could.

When asked “If EA said ‘ you can have our engine’, would you take it?” Takatsuka said: “I would think about it really seriously because EA’s engine and animation is really superb.” Although Takatsuka, strangely, then added he wouldn’t use the ultra-realistic character models based on the footballers’ real measurements, saying: “The modelling of the characters is perhaps not really to my taste.”

Takatsuka’s focus for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is the online modes. But his comments do implicitly admit that, if anything, that FIFA has been ahead this last year – in terms of modes, gameplay and particularly visuals. We wait to see if Takatsuka can score the equaliser in 2009.
