When will this expansion pack madness end? Following the strategy it has adopted with The Sims, Electronic Arts is to release its first expansion pack for Spore in November 18, according to a listing that was briefly placed on its own US download store (and following brief listings on US Amazon and other retailers).
Regular drip-feeds of new content for games is nothing new. But the world’s largest videogame company have, with The Sims, produced more expansion packs, more regularly than for any other game. With enough users still apparently keen to pony up for new content. And the company clearly has the same plan in mind for alien civilisation sim Spore.
Hopefully, though, this time their strategy will backfire. With Spore users generating record-breaking amounts of their own creatures and content, why pay for an expansion that just gives you a few new arms and legs? Users on the official EA UK forums aren’t keen. Thm726P: “they need to make a Space Expansion pack not 10 extra parts”. Xatso: “I just bought this cool racing game, but for some reason the car couldn’t go past 40 mph as it was running on bicycle wheels. I had to buy the ‘Wheels addon pack’ before I could play properly. Just a shame all the cars are white, but I heard they are bringing out a paint pack later this year…”.
The Cute & Creepy parts pack also breaks one of the central features of the game – users can download and then edit anyone else’s creations. Except, presumably, you won’t be able to edit creations that use the parts from the pack if you haven’t downloaded the pack.

Spore was always prime for add-on madness, but like you say, it does seem to detract from the core point of the game - sharing, editing and evolving creatures. That said, I found myself getting bored with the creature creator after an hour or so of fiddling. I’m not nearly arty enough to get the most out of it!
