Apple's new MacBook Pro... with a mysterious taped connector.

Brand new spy shots of Apple’s forthcoming MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops have leaked onto the web, showing the latter with a curious new connector on its side.

The photos, unearthed by AppleInsider, show the new MacBook Pro adopting the same keyboard as existing MacBooks. It also reveals that Apple’s top-tier laptops will shun their Firewire 400 ports to save space. However, there’s also the addition of a new socket in the bottom left corner.

In these shots, it’s shown covered with masking tape, but speculation is rife as to what it could be.

eSATA for ultra-quick external hard drives? HDMI to connect the laptops to big screen TVs?

The second option would definitely make sense, considering we’ve already heard rumours the new models will pack Blu-Ray drives too.

Whatever it is, we’ll find out at Apple’s special event tomorrow. Until then, any last-minute feature requests for the new MacBooks? The comments section is below.

How disappointing would it be if it turned out to be an SD card slot…

It looks the right size to be HDMI to me. Which suggests Blu-Ray is indeed making an appearance. If that’s the case, isn’t it about time Apple TV got an update with Blu-Ray inside, or a Blu-Ray add on for existing owners?!

Can’t see it being either. It’s too narrow to be an SD slot and not deep enough (and too wide) to be an HDMI socket. It actually looks a bit like the video port. Which, if the whole “docking” thing is going on, makes sense, no?

Video port it is, fanboy! Good shout.
