The BBC’s iPlayer might have been available on the iPhone, iPod touch and Nokia N96 for a while, but now it’s branching out, welcoming Windows Media devices and PMPs.
The Beeb’s on-demand head honcho, Anthony Rose, announced the move on the BBC Internet Blog, stating: ”As part of our ongoing mission to make BBC iPlayer available on more devices, I’m pleased to announce that BBC iPlayer TV programmes can now be downloaded to portable media players that are able to support Windows Media-protected content.”
That includes the new Sony Walkman E and S series, the Archos 605 Internet media tablet, the Philips Go Gear 52xx series, and Samsung’s YP-P2 and YP-Q1.
However, it’s not quite what you might be expecting. Rose explained: “These devices do not have internet connectivity, so we’re talking about a download rather than a streaming experience…These devices are not the only devices that support Windows Media Protected playback – others do as well, but we’ve tested BBC iPlayer on these devices and are happy with the user experience.”
To make choosing a device that’ll support the iPlayer easier, the BBC’s knocked up a page full of gadgets they have tested with the service. Check it out before splashing the cash if you’re keen on watching telly on the go.
