Acer Aspire laptop with WiMAXWiMAX, the long-range wireless technology offering 3G-like download speeds, is currently being rolled out in the US, starting off with Baltimore. And thanks to a pair of new WiMAX-toting laptops from Acer, residents of the city can access the web wherever they roam.

The models, the Aspire 4930-6862 and Aspire 6930-6771, offer compatibility with the Xohm network currently active in Baltimore, which delivers a download speed of between 2Mbps and 4Mbps (and an upload speed of half that). Xohm plans to extend the network to the rest of the US in time.

In addition to WiMAX compatibility, both models feature Intel Centrino processors, 3GB of RAM, 320GB hard drives, Wi-Fi, DVD burners and Windows Vista, and both cost $899.99 (about £525). The 4930-6862 has a 14-inch screen, while the 6930-6771 has a 16-inch widescreen.
