Rumours are one thing, but the evidence behind the newest Nintendo tid bit seems the real deal. Word is reaching us that Nintendo has a HD Wii in development, and is poised to unleash it in 2011.
According to What They Play, developer and publisher sources have said the new console will be truly “next generation” and a “true successor to the Wii.”
It’s also claimed the console will pack HD output, a greater emphasis on downloaded content, and full backwards compatibility with the existing Wii.
The site also claims the next-gen Wii will have much larger storage built in.
But it’s not just anonymous sources and speculation. What They Play has also waded through Nintendo’s financial reports, like a stalker rifling through a rubbish bin, and has found evidence of a dramatically increased research and development spend.
It all points to something big on the horizon. And considering the existing Wii’s hardware is governed by a joint development agreement between IBM and AMD, which comes to an end in 2011, the timing is perfect.
