The G1 - an old design, apparentlyThe T-Mobile G1 phone might be a bit of a stunner in our book, but ex-Googler Ulf Washbusch isn’t quite so taken with it. The former Mobile Manager at the software giant has used his Facebook status to have a right old moan about the world’s first Android phone.

“Ulf is disappointed but not surprised about the ‘G1′.” read Washbusch’s status. “Where’s the cheap data plan? Where do I plug in my headphones? No video player? How do I get contacts in it?”

Not content with that, he also tore into the G1 on his blog, writing, “[The hardware design] hasn’t changed much in a while… The reason many people see the G1 as ugly and old-fashioned is simply… because it IS! It’s a design unchanged for a while (it’s now available in Zune-brown along with white and black).”

Washbusch has since updated his blog, seeking to clarify the fact that he thinks the Android OS is great and that he didn’t intend to be seen as a disgruntled ex-Googler – he simply just doesn’t like the design and styling of the device. Fair enough.

I’m sort of siding with Washbusch on this one. The software’s nice, but the phone is kinda fugly.

I was chatting with a high-up name in mobile manufacturing the other day, and he was flat out amazed at the design. “Full of opportunities for mechanical failure” was how he put it – talking about the slide-up-and-out design of the keyboard in particular. Still, plenty more Android phones to come, lets hope the next bunch are prettier too!
