Canon’s been churning out new models today like nobody’s business, and if all you need a camera for is to take pictures of you and your mates on a night out, you might have been feeling a little bit left out of the SLR love in.
Thankfully, Canon haven’t ignored compact users, and the latest Digital IXUS models, the 870 IS and 980 IS, have been quietly revealed today. We’ve tried them out, and they don’t disappoint.
The 870 IS makes a perfect accompaniment to a night out – snap away 10 megapixel shots in 19 different mode, so lighting won’t prove a problem, while the lovely three inch screen means you can see what you’re taking no matter how blurred your vision. Most excitingly though, it bucks the boring silver trend most compacts stick to, coming in a lovely gold finish, if you want to look really minted.
The 980 IS meanwhile really is a whole 110 better, with a massive 14.7 MP sensor surely almost making it an SLR. It’s specifically made for people pictures, with face detection technology that can recognise up to 35 mugs in a frame, and focus properly for them. Both come with the camera company’s new Digic4 chip, which lets you take pictures faster than Usain Bolt can jog, so get your trigger fingers ready for next month’s release.
