Mobile fishfarm making waves

fish farmThe growth in Aquaculture over the past decade has been phenominal, we’re eating more fish, stocks are depleting in some areas and catching the blighters is one of the world most dangerous jobs. Step up Ocean Technologies who’ve made underwater pens for a few years and are now entering into a joint effort with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to build ones that move autonomously.

The sixty odd foot geosedic dome is shark proof and built to withstand crashing waves out in the open sea, to date most fish farm pens had to be located nearer shore which caused concern as it had started, in some areas, to compromise the quality of water.

By attaching two huge propellers to the cage the dome can be transported to differing locations, a postitive impact on the eco-system and necessary periodically to stop the spread of disease within the “crop”.

So instead of getting tugboats out for a move the group hope to be able to pre-program the farms and let them re-position themselves and know when to return to base for harvesting.
