7digitalSay good bye to file restrictions. Apple may have been running their mouths off about making the iTunes store completely DRM-free, but 7Digital have made it first past the post to legitimately offer every major label’s entire catalogue without fussy security protection.

As of today, Sony-BMG will offer their complete catalogue on the music download service on high quality DRM-free MP3, making 7digital the first to offer no-limits music from all the big four labels. Sony must be wearing some sort of friendly hat, as the label is also offering free upgrades to their tracks already purchased by 7digital customers.

7digital have also opened up their API to third-party coders, meaning anyone can add clever applications to the site, from social networks to widgets which warn you if a track is produced by Timbaland. Even if you don’t know your XML from your NFL, that’s still good news, as us ordinary folk will be able to slap tunes from the 7digi catalogue on our blogs, and earn a tasty commission from them.

And for continental EP readers, the fun times don’t stop there as the site opens its doors to users in Austria, Portugal and Italy, with a North American service expected by Christmas. Now all we need is for the Beatles to let people buy their songs online, and we might be able to have some sort of MP3-themed party. No one come dressed as a pirate.

It’s great to have so many different options available for different types of consumers and congratulations to 7digital for getting the four majors onboard. For our users at We7, we have found that whole track streaming and the ability to make and share playlists is as important as the facility to buy the tracks and albums they really love. Having recently signed a deal with [PIAS] as well as three of the four major labels and hundreds of independent labels.
