Pioneer’s new Kuros - blackout! It’s no secret that Pioneer makes the best plasma TVs on the planet: the firm’s Kuro range has been wowing our eyeballs with its awesome black levels and colour reproduction for well over a year now. And now there are two new models promising to deliver blacks that are five times deeper than that!

The 50-inch KRP-500A and 60-inch KRP-600A have just been unveiled in Pioneer’s native Japan, and their “newly-developed drive system” apparently does away with “idle luminance” (light leakage, in other words), leaving blacks that are blacker than ever. Yes, by a factor of five. That means sharper, clearer, better-defined pictures, whether you’re watching a 1080p Blu-ray movie or simply catching the latest episode of Corrie.

One of the only things we didn’t really like on the current PDP-LX5080 model is the shiny, reflective screen surface, and huzzah – that’s been addressed on these new ‘uns. The Advanced Direct Color Filter is designed to minimise external light reflection, “even in bright living rooms”.

The models are also skinnier than ever, being a mere 64mm deep. Not quite the 9.9mm Sony Bravia ZX1, sure, but not bad for a huge, high-end plasma.

We don’t know when these models will arrive in the UK, or how much they’ll cost – but when we do we’ll let you know.
