Asus Eee PC 901 now with 3GFeeling slightly jealous that the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 with be 3G enabled from the off? Fear not, as the ever resourceful JKKMobile is back and this time he’s getting happy with a soldering iron, a 3G card and an Eee PC 901.

Okay, this upgrade isn’t for the faint hearted – it involves some pretty advanced solder skills if you want to get it to work, but the pay off is pretty big.

You’ll need to secure yourself not just an internal 3G card to slip inside, but also a Mini PCI-E connector as cheapskate Asus has left it out, saving a whopping 20 cents on every machine made. Once you’ve got everything to hand, click on over to JKKMobile for the full run down of what to do next. Good luck!

Hmm lets see… just based on your figures- 20¢ per pci-e connector per unit, so $1 for every 5 made… make 1/2 million units and waste $100,000 on a connector that can only be accessed if you take the laptop to pieces.
Also the SIM card holder is probably at least another 20¢ even in quantity so based on your numbers you’re looking at more like $200,000 for every 500,000 units manufactured.
Its not cheapskate its a sensible rational manufacturing decision.

A ‘sensible, rational manufacturing decision’, Spambot? No, it’s cheapskate behaviour from a greedy company! When you look at how much they charge for these netbooks, there’s more than enough profit to make them 3G from the off. A mini laptop which doesn’t have a built-in WWAN SIM slot? Ridiculous & pointless.
