Xperia X1We now know that Sony Ericsson’s much anticipated Xperia X1 phone is due to hit on 30 September, but if that feels like too long to wait you can get a sneak preview next week.

We’re big fans of the X1′s panel system, which lets you personalise nine blocks on the handset and tailor them to your needs, as well as the full QWERTY keyboard to help pretend to the boss you’re doing spreadsheets on the train rather than looking at the footie scores. If you’re confused by what a “nine panel ecosystem” is though, don’t worry: SE will be explaining all on a live webcast here on 15 September at 1pm.

Anyone who registers to watch will also be able to enjoy an episode of Sony Ericsson’s webshow thriller, Johnny X, about a man who loses his identity and has to piece it back together using his Xperia X1. While it sounds a bit like those Orange ads after the trailers in the cinema, we reckon it might be worth a view.

Out: 30 September | £TBA | Sony Ericsson

The response of the QWERTY keyboard leaves a lot to be desired, the external buttons feel cheap, it runs Windows Mobile instead of Symbian and it’s not actually that compact – lets just say that my iPhone purchase is still looking like the right choice.

My previous phones have been P1i, P990i, P900 and P800 so it’s not like I’m biased or anything…
