Yes, we know the new iPod Touch is lovely and all, but it strikes us as more 1.5G than full-blown 2G. Why? Well, there are still some key things missing – read on and we’ll tell you what they are…
1. Storage
32GB isn’t a bad amount of storage space, we guess – but why not up it to iPod Classic-rivalling standards? Serious musos want to carry more than 7,000 songs at low quality – they want thousands of lossless tunes, and that’s just not what the Touch is designed for. Yet.
2. No “shake to shuffle”
The new nano has a nifty feature that lets you shuffle songs by giving it a jiggle – but that’s conspicuous by its absence here. The Touch has an accelerometer, so why, Apple, why? Perhaps this could be added as a small firmware update…
3. No stereo Bluetooth
Some people hate wires with a passion. Hate ‘em. They want to listen to music through wireless Bluetooth headphones, and they don’t want to use an ungainly “dongle” to do it. Stick stereo Bluetooth in the next Touch, please.
4. GPS
The Touch already does a lot of the things the iPhone 3G can do, so why not go one step further and include a GPS receiver? That way – in tandem with a Google Maps app, of course – it can guide us home after a heavy night (in which the iPhone 3G’s disappointing battery has been caned).
5. Higher res screen
Yes, we know this is a bit cheeky, but why not up the screen resolution too? PMPs from Archos and Cowon are way ahead of the Touch and iPhone when it comes to pixel count. And yes, we know that PMPs are fatter and heavier than the Touch – but if Apple want to wow us they’ll up the detail and keep the skinny frame intact.
