Apple’s brand new iPod touchThe iPod touch is better than ever. Apple just unveiled a new version with an ultra-skinny profile, built-in Nike +iPod receiver, a speaker and compatibility with its swanky new headphones. Want more details? We’ve got ‘em all, as well as more pics.

Steve Jobs has only just announced it and already we’ve managed to smear our grubby fingerprints across its crystal clear 3.5″ screen. The first thing you’ll notice is just how thin those clever clogs at Apple have managed to make it: it’s almost two-dimensional. Turn it sideways and you could easily lose it.

Yet somehow, they’ve still managed to get a speaker in there – it’s internal though, so you won’t see any tell-tale speaker grilles, and it’s dead quiet. Steve Jobs says it’s good for “casual listening” and after trying it, we’d struggle to hear it on the back of the bus. That’s good news for other travellers.

Apple’s new headphones plug straight in and boss the touch around from a tiny remote on the cord. Just like the iPhone, you can double click to skip a track, the the new headphones also use a triple click to go back a track, and pack volume keys too. Of course, a single click still plays and pauses the music.

There are also slim volume keys on the side. They’re hardly noticeable, but will mean you can control the volume without fishing the new iPod touch from your pocket.

The iTunes Genius software is all present and accounted for, with the stroke of a finger bringing up as many songs as you want that’ll go with the song you’re listening to. Think of it as Last.fm or Pandora for iPods.

Best of all though for fitness aficianados is the fact that Nike +iPod is now built in to the touch – no need for a receiver jangling around whilst you hit the treadmill. Know how far you’ve run, how much you’ve burned and boost yourself with a power song in an instant. Unless you lose it down a crack in the pavement.
