Pull My Finger, Apple won’t.Here’s something we’re sure you already know: fart jokes are funny. Now, can someone please tell Apple? They just banned what we think is the funniest iPhone app yet, or maybe it’s just the developer’s deadpan delivery.

Take a look at this video and decide for yourself.

Simply dubbed “Pull My Finger,” we’re sure you can guess what the iPhone app does. But for those without a playground education, it makes fart noises when you pull the fingers of various on-screen characters.

Simple, yes, but it’s also hilarious. Unless you’re Apple’s app reviewers, that is. They wrote to the developer, stating that Pull My Finger would not be included in the App Store as it “is of limited utility to the broad iPhone and iPod touch user community.”

Strange. We’ve struggled to see the “utility” in many iPhone apps so far. Koi Pond, for instance, simply lets us ogle pretty fish and poke their virtual pond. The fish don’t even fart! It’s an outrage!

What’s more, Apple’s happy to promote Koi Pond on the iTunes Store, alongside other apps of “limited utility” like Magic iBall (unless Apple really believes it tells the future), Zen Garden (since when has raking pretend sand and dropping stones been a valuable utility?) and Bubbles (yes, we’re often asked by desperate passers by if we have a way to pop virtual bubbles.)

What we’re concerned about is Apple’s vetting process. Just because it’s not useful, doesn’t mean we don’t want it. Hell, it’s funny, which surely makes it useful, if only in raising a much-needed smile!

The video’s worth watching just for the annotated user comments.

I love this app. Sorry, but Apple’s got it dead wrong in barring it from the App Store. It’s such obvious snobbery. Oh, but they’ll happily list Jackass for sale in the TV section, complete with all the puke, poo and farts you can fit in your iPod. Double standards, anyone?

  3. [...] Controversial? Yep. Good looking? Definitely. Let’s just hope Apple doesn’t have a “no stabbing” clause in its iPhone app terms and conditions. [...]
