LED backlighting seems to be the theme for tellies at this year’s IFA show, with Sony, Philips and now Sharp all unveiling new models that switch outmoded flourescent tubes for crisp LEDs.
Sharp’s new LC-XS1E range of TVs use LEDs to deliver what the makers claim is a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. In English, that means eye-searingly bright whites and deep, bottomless blacks - a far greater range of brightness than you’d see on a traditional LCD TV.
Having seen the LC-XS1E in action, we’d also say it gives good colour: reds and greens are incredibly vibrant and saturated. Details of specs, pricing and an on-sale date are still up in the air at the moment, but we’ll give you an update when we get them.
