Screaming “BACK OFF!” in the face of CO2, Toshiba today has announced at IFA 2008 that upcoming LCD televisions and notebook PCs will be earning serious Mother Nature brownie points. Eco’d up to the eyeballs, the new Toshiba 42XV515D comes loaded with smart new innards that enable it to reduce the amount of backlights used via an ‘advanced brightness control’ technique, meaning it uses less power, which will keep the bunnies hopping in the meadows for another season at least.
The 42XV515D is also 19% lighter than the old 2006 model, which according to Toshiba’s eco calculator has the knock-on effect of cutting CO2 emissions by 173g a day. And future models are set to shave those emissions down by 216g a day. Sure, there’s a bit of the old smoke and mirrors going on here, as we’re sucked in by fancy numbers and percentages, but in fairness hats off to Toshiba for putting it on the agenda and acting on it. Small acorns and all that, eh.
Talking of small, Toshiba’s dinky notebooks are also set for an eco overhaul. The Portégé R500 series is packing a stack of energy efficient features meaning that it cuts its CO2 emissions by 69g a day. Plus, its marathon battery life means you’ll be able to eek around 7.5 hours from its eco shell.
