Exclusive: Sony’s ultra-thin Bravia ZX1 sent our jaws to the floor at IFA this morning. It’s just 9.9mm thin, using next-gen LED backlights to shrink its profile. But there’s a cost. Sony says the biggest they can me made is 40 inches.
The limitation’s a result of Sony’s unique backlighting tech, which positions LEDs around the edge of the screen, pointing inwards. As a result, if the screen is too large, there’s a chance viewers will see a dark spot in the middle, which the light simply can’t reach.
“For the current generation, we’ve found 40 inches is the optimum size” explained Sony’s technology marketing manager, Tim Page.
It’s a problem that’s being dealt with by Sony, but for the moment the firm’s still the top dog in skin-o-vision, so don’t expect to see a new version until next year.
