We’ve seen a robot with sticky feet before that can scale vertical surfaces, but this one from Boston dynamics isn’t restricted to smooth surfaces, RiSE can climb almost anything thats 90 degrees.
The small six-legged machine counts walls, trees and fences amongst its accomplishments, and does so using interchangeable feet featuring claws, micro-claws or sticky material depending what it’s attempting to ascend.
The RiSE robot alters its posture to adapt to the curvature of the climbing surface, while a fixed tail helps to keep the 1/4 metre machine steady.
Each leg is driven by two mini-motors with an onboard computer controlling leg motion, communication and various sensors to keep it clinging on, and perhaps stop it looking down.
Boston Dynamics are looking at developing future versions that’ll have the ability to stick to glass and other slimy surfaces.
You can run, you can climb, but you can’t hide from these seemingly unstoppable machines.
