Wi-Fi is for connecting to the internet, Bluetooth is for mice and headsets, right? Well, not if Ozmo has anything to say about it with its new Wi-Fi PAN (personal area network) mouse, which connects using the regular 802.11 wireless receiver in your laptop. And you thought things were looking complicated with Wireless USB coming along at some point in the future.
The idea is a simple one - rather than having both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built in, you can do everything with just one wireless receiver. The really clever bit is that Ozmo’s special driver allows the PC to connect to both WPAN and WLAN networks at the same time.
The technology is compatible with both 802.11g and 802.11a wireless, which means it should work with almost every laptop made in the last three years. As well as mice, Ozmo has also got it working with audio, so you can expect streaming music over Wi-Fi too.
It’s all at the development stage at the moment, but it seems like a good idea to us - especially if your laptop hasn’t already got Bluetooth built in.
