So, Vista – that didn’t pan out ever so well, did it? Still, Microsoft is not getting disheartened at the less than rapturous response to its last OS and is ploughing on with plans for the next version of Windows, of which it’s promised we’ll find out more soon.
So far we do know that it will support multi-touch and it’s going to be built on the Windows Server 2008 kernel. However, before your fingers start twitching at the thought of dragging things around the screen with multiple digits, multi-touch won’t be the default way to get things done in Windows 7 and will only be used by certain programs.
Microsoft has set its sights on a late 2009 or possibly early 2010 launch date, which should be fine provided it doesn’t take anywhere near as long as the five years it took to get Vista out the door. It’ll be showing off what it’s got so far at its PDC get together in October and a bit more in November at WinHec. In the meantime you can keep up with the team on the Windows 7 Blog.
