Just to remind us how far the company has come with the new Latitude E-series, Dell wheeled out XPi, its first portable Latitude PC. It’s more of a leg-breaker than a laptop though. It was the first to introduce Li-ion batteries in 1994, but it weighed nearly 3kg and looks like an electric typewriter.
The 340MB hard drive was quite a coup back then too and the 10.4-inch screen was considered cutting edge even though the resolution was lower than European broadcast TV. The Lithium Ion batteries were the real breakthrough, making it possible to work out of the office realistically for the first time, provided you were strong enough to lift it off the desk.
