Super Monkey BallThe iPhone is on a roll, literally. Sega and Apple have managed to roll out 300,000 Super Monkey Ball games for the iPhone in just 20 days, raking in $30million in that time.

The chimp rolling title, which currently sells for £5.99 on the UK app store proves that gaming can thrive on Apple’s phones.

“That’s a substantial business,” Sega US president Simon Jeffery told The Wall Street Journal. “It gives iPhone a justifiable claim to being a viable gaming platform.”

It was only a month ago that Forbes said the iPhone could ‘kill the Nintendo DS’, as Apple has crammed in the handhelds features in both iPhone and iPod Touch.

The iPhone might be a growing gaming platform but until phones can match the controls of dedicated handhelds we don’t think they’ll be any console murders, for now.

Does the emergence of successful iPhone games signal the end for handhelds? Let us know in the comments section.
