If you’re poking away at your iPhone and your app suddenly stops running don’t complain to Apple, chances are it was Steve Jobs’ own doing after he confirmed Apple has the power to turn off iPhone apps at the touch of a button.
Of course Jobs wouldn’t just switch off an app for no reason. Apple’s “kill switch” is for our own benefit should some malicious applications breach our blowers.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Jobs said: “we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull.”
Of course, he’s right. We’re quite glad Apple has an emergency protocol to deal with misbehaving software. But what if it’s simply 3rd party apps, say, enabled by crafty hackers? We’ve a sneaking suspicion there’s more to this than meets the eye.
