The Wii workoutStill looking to shed that extra pound or two before the summer’s out? Then head down to the gym for a Wii workout. A New York City gym is charging body conscious folk $110 to do just that.

It’s a stretch from the vision of games contributing to an unhealthy lifestyle or worse, but personal trainer Dorothy Evans believes it works.

“You’d be surprised. It may have little to do with the real sports, but we get people’s heart rates up to 140 to 150 beats per minute – although some of that may just be the excitement of the game,” she said.

Evans explained the workout uses the Wii during “recovery time”, perhaps giving it less credit than some of her clients, who reckon it’s perfect for giving your workouts an extra kick.

“I decided to give it a try to break up the monotony – I just felt like I was in a rut. But I was not really prepared – it kicked my ass.” Said Robyn Angrick, 29, who’s had two Wii boxing workouts.

A study by the American Council on Exercise found that it’s possible to burn as many calories playing the Wii as real-life sports.

They found that Wii Boxing burns an average of 7.2 calories per minute, compared to 10.2 calories when actually sparring.

What next? Wii Music being used to teach kids to play the flute? We wouldn’t be surprised.
