Apple’s mammoth iPhone software update hasn’t just fixed a ton of bugs, it’s also put the kybosh on hackers from the Phone Dev Team, whose Pwnage unlocking tool no longer works with updated handsets.
It’s a setback for those wanting to use an iPhone with the latest software on networks other than Apple’s approved handful. However, we’ve a feeling the illustrious Dev Team won’t stay down for long.
At the moment, there’s confusion over exactly which hacks the software update disables. It appears those with first generation iPhones can install the update, and continue to use their phone in its unlocked state, although they’ll lose any 3rd party applications they’ve installed.
Those with iPhone 3G handsets are less lucky, since the update reverses the unlocking, or jailbreaking, process, as well as wiping 3rd party apps.
“As soon as testing is finished a PwnageTool update will be released that will allow you to safely update either device with all current PwnageTool features still in place,” the iPhone Dev Team’s blog states.
Stay tuned for more as we hear it.
