Rumours of new iPod nanos continue to swirl around the web, but the latest says Apple’s got more up its sleeve than simple colour and capacity changes. Word is the nano’s whole shape is set for a re-think, cramming in bigger screens too.
According to iLounge, the next-generation nano will shun the tubby frame of the current model, and revert back to the “thin” shape of the original.
The screen will also employ a 1.5:1 aspect ratio, to put it on par with the iPhone and iPod touch.
Word is the new model will also include an accelerometer, letting the nano know which way up it’s being held, so it can display movies in full-screen landscape mode.
But we think there’s more to this rumour than meets the eye. Yes, it’d be nice to have a bigger screen, and a thinner shape, but what’s the real reason for this change? Apps. That’s what!
If Apple can squeeze in an accelerometer, and a screen with scaled proportions of the iPhone and iPod touch screen, it means apps already created for the existing App Store could also run.
Sure, there’s no word of a touchscreen for the nano, but that doesn’t mean some games and apps couldn’t work with a little tweaking, generating more income for Apple through software sales.
