After the success of the Wii, we’d forgive Nintendo for taking time out to give themselves a pat on the back, but not a bit of it: The Big N’s president says its already hard at work on the console’s successor.
Speaking to Forbes, Satoru Iwata said the company is “always preparing for the next hardware” but that ultimately, it’s the games and the experience that will sell a console.
“The hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games,” he said. Adding that the next-gen Wii is still very much “under development.”
“It’s natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different,” he said. “If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it’s going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again.”
That sounds like it’s going to be more of the same from the next version of the Wii, but then Nintendo has a reputation for surprising gamers, so we’ll have to wait and see.
