Apple’s latest iPhone firmware holds more than bug fixes and refined GPS performance, with hackers disassembling the software to reveal references to a next-gen iPod touch.
Although not mentioned by name, a reference to “iPod 2,1” is made in the new iPhone firmware, while current generation iPod touch models are known as “iPod 1,1”.
Likewise, the first generation iPhone is known as “iPhone 1,1” while the new 3G model is known as “iPhone 1,2”.
What this means is that the iPod touch is set for a major redesign, not simply an update, as was the case between the original iPhone the iPhone 3G.
What’s in store? Nobody but Apple’s top brass know for sure, but with foundations being laid in software due within the next few months it’s safe to say we won’t have to wait long to find out.

This may sound a bit obvious but after the 2.0 software update - does that not make the iPod touch 2.1 seem a little less exciting?
