Is an aluminium MacBook incoming? The word on web street is that a new range of MacBooks is coming soon, and that they’re going to be packing some seriously special technology under the hood.

We’ve already heard rumours of aluminium cases and multi-touch trackpads made of glass, but according to AppleInsider the new laptops could also be sporting all-new chipsets, designed specifically for them in order to deliver optimum performance, and perhaps help offer extended battery life, lower weight and a more compact size.

The current MacBook range uses Intel’s Santa Rosa chipsets, which are also featured on rival laptops from the likes of Dell and HP, but Apple reportedly wants to maintain its current sales growth by offering advantages other PC-makers can’t match. Apple financial bigwig Peter Oppenheimer recently told a conference call: “We have some investments in front of us that I can’t discuss with you today where we’re going to be delivering state of the art new products that our competitors just aren’t going to be able to match.” Could he be talking about the new MacBook?
