The Xbox’s online multiplayer service could get a lot more attractive if reports are to be believed: some gamers have found free multiplayer options, hinting Microsoft’s considering ditching the Live service’s subscription fee.
Xbox Live currently charges users for a Gold account, which is needed to play online, but according to the gamers at Kotaku that could be about to change.
“It seems that ending the gold/silver distinction in Games for Windows Live (effectively making it free) might have had the same effect for those who game on titles that are both PC and 360,” the blog explains.
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition, Universe at War: Earth Assault and Shadowrun all seem to offer free online play so far.
Of course, it’s all rumour until Microsoft kicks subscription costs out of the door. Keep if here for news of that happening, or not, in the coming weeks.

I’m sure many people like me who have recently coughed up £30/40 for another years subscription will love to hear this.
just so you know he got it wrong. This was actually a bug as they recently made it so that the games for windows games were free however games which allowed pc to xbox play became free as well. They released a statement saying it was a promotion and this will only last until the new dashboard is released in autumn. if you want proof go here
meh. £30-£40 a year is practically nothing for what Xbox Live offers compared to PSN (which is ****)
if they do make it free, it will be another nail in the coffin for the PS3 though, if they dont, i’m still willing to pay for the sevice
