Electronic ink is about to hit the big time, and the news stand. Esquire’s planning to embed an e-ink panel in the cover of its September issue, bringing digital printing to a newsagent near you.
To celebrate the magazine’s 75th year, the words “the 21st Century Begins Now” will be flashed across the cover using e-ink, but getting the cover to work hasn’t been easy.
Esquire’s publisher, Hearst, had to invest heavily to create a battery that could fit in the magazine and power the e-ink panel. The result is a cover that’ll be electrified for 90 days before running out of juice.
It’s not clear either, whether the special cover will be seen outside the United States.
