The TechCrunch Tablet mockupWeb startup blog TechCrunch really, really wants a low cost tablet and can’t wait any longer. Owner Michael Arrington has launched a project to hopefully create a cheap $200 Linux based surfer.

The idea is to get the community involved to design it and then open source the specification so anyone can built it. It’ll be low cost, so probably have Wi-Fi, one USB port, 512MB of memory and 4GB of flash storage.

Linux would be the OS and Firefox the browser of choice. Once you’re in, you’d run everything in Firefox, so you wouldn’t actually see the OS at all. Could it be better than the rumoured Mac tablet that Apple may or may not have waiting in the wings?
