Apple’s stranglehold on the world of music downloads might not last much longer: Sky’s just partnered with Universal Music to allow DRM-free downloads, either to rent or own.
Like similar subscription services from the likes of Napster, a monthly fee will allow unlimited listening from the store’s music library, but there’ll also be the option to buy individual tracks for keeps.
Since the music downloads will be DRM-free, they’ll work on any MP3 player, including the iPod.
Sky’s currently lining up other music companies to provide content, while Universal will provide back catalogues of U2, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Mika, the Killers, Snow Patrol, Luciano Pavarotti, and even ABBA.
Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO, Universal Music Group International, adds: “The new Sky service will provide a compelling digital music experience, built for the ever growing digital appetite of music fans.
