Bouyed by recent sales of titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV and the PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4, SCE President, Kaz Hirai believes the console could sell even more than both the PSone and PS2.
Both PSone (102 million sales) and PS2 (140 million ongoing) consoles sold phenomenally well. But Hirai reckons the PS3 will do better.
“It’s not fun for me replicating the PS2 numbers. I’ve seen that movie already,” Hirai said.
“I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?”
At the end of March PS3 reached 12.85m units. Sony said last week it’s “well on its way” to grabbing its ten million sales target for the current financial year.
With PS3 exclusive titles such as LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and MAG (trailer below) on the way, it certainly looks promising. Who knows, maybe it’ll further blunt the Wii’s edge.
