Here’s an odd nugget of iPhone news: It seems Apple’s handset has tweaked firmware for the Japanese market, which keeps the camera’s shutter sound on, even in silent mode, to discourage voyeuristic users from snapping “upskirt” shots of passing ladies.
Yes, we had to read it twice too, but according to Gizmodo, “the problem of up-skirt photography is so bad in Japan that most new cellphones have this feature.”
Apparently, some phones even pack an amplified shutter sound to alert women to peeping toms, although the iPhone settles for its standard volume.
Of course, since the iPhone 3G has now been thoroughly hacked, there’s nothing to stop resourceful sex-pests nipping inside and removing the troublesome sound effect.
