SAUV II is a solar-powered autonomous machine, designed for underwater observation and water monitoring that can stay out under its own steam for longer periods and therefore collate reams of data.
The future of this initial effort is aimed at providing a mid-ocean communications hub for ship-to-satellite chatter, as well as providing a security presence, as it monitors coastal areas and strategic ports.
Its 3 knot top speed isn’t going to make many waves, but a 500 metre depth limit makes up for its sloth-like forward progress.
