We’ve been waiting for what seems like an age for Sony to launch PlayTV, its digital TV recorder module for the PS3 - but now the big S has finally fixed a date of 10th September.
This dinky box, which connects to the console via USB, houses a pair of Freeview tuners and works a little like Sky+: you can record content direct to the PS3’s hard drive; record one channel while you watch another; and pause and rewind live broadcasts thanks to a constant caching of whatever you’re watching. You’ll be able to set recordings using a 7-day electronic programme guide.
PlayTV also integrates nicely with the PSP. You’ll be able to transfer shows across to the handheld console via USB, or access live TV and your PS3’s recordings, or schedule new recordings, from anywhere in the world via Remote Play and your PSP’s Wi-Fi connection. Which sounds very nifty indeed.
