O2’s given us the full skinny ahead of the iPhone 3G launch tomorrow, explaining that its stores will stock just a few dozen handsets each, and that the company is braced for an on-going struggle with supplies all summer.
“We are experiencing unprecedented demand for the device and whilst we are confident that all customers who want iPhone 3G will get one by the end of this summer, initial supply is limited and will be for some weeks,” O2’s statement explains.
As we’ve previously reported, sales of the iPhone 3G will be limited to one per customer and two for business customers.
Some O2 stores will open at 8:02am tomorrow, while others will open later. You can find out if your local store will open early by clicking here.
If you plan to buy an iPhone in store tomorrow, make sure you take two forms of ID, a valid credit or debit card and proof of address. Otherwise you’ll find yourself walking away empty handed.
Also, if you’re a new O2 customer you’ll need to pass a credit check before being handed your new iPhone. The average time for this is 20 minutes.
If you’re completely new to the iPhone, you’ll also be able to buy a handset from Apple stores, although existing O2 customers can only upgrade to the phone in O2 or Carphone Warehouse stores.
O2 says that, while shortages are inevitable, new consignments of iPhones will arrive on a weekly basis, and will be available both on high streets and online.
“We are sorry that we can’t meet all demand as quickly as we’d like,” O2’s statement concluded, “but we’re sure that when you get your new iPhone 3G you’ll agree it’s been worth the wait.”
