Last.fm: now accepting unsigned uploads, for cash!In a band? You should be. Last.fm’s about to turn it into a profitable activity, record deal or not. They’ve just launched a royalty scheme to pay unsigned acts every time their music’s streamed through the site.

Get yourself a nice little online following, and you might just be able to dodge the record companies altogether.

Unsigned acts just need to upload their tracks to Last.fm, and wait for the fans (and cash) to come pouring in.

Speaking to Distorted Loop, Martin Stiksel, Last.fm co-founder, said: “This is a big day for independent artists. We’re leveling the playing field by offering them the same opportunities as established bands to make money from their music.

“The young musician making music in a bedroom studio has the same chance as the latest major label signing to use Last.fm to build an audience and get rewarded. The Artist Royalty Program is another revolutionary step towards helping musicians take control of their music — and, more importantly, make a living from it.”
