Driving an eco car needn’t mean trundling around in an embarrassing excuse for a motor, Ferrari’s got its own hybrid supercar in the works, guaranteed to turn heads without emptying your wallet at the petrol pump.
Speaking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said the company plans to reduce CO2 levels by 40% before 2012. It’ll be done using hybrid technology, as well as new turbocharged V6 engines which are both smaller and more fuel-efficient.
“We are currently working on the development of a Ferrari that will use alternative energy sources and which will be based on what we are doing at the moment in Formula 1″, he said.
The system will reportedly use KERS (Kinetic Energy Recycling System) to recover energy from braking, as well as a completely new CVT gearbox, which is more efficient than current models.
Don’t think the supercar maker will water down its designs for a hybrid though. Luca di Montezemolo says any eco-friendly car “would still have to fundamentally a Ferrari.”
That means lots of speed, eye-popping designs, and a drive to die for.
