You can now pre-order the iPhone 3G online, and it’ll be in stores on Friday. But what to do with your old Apple handset?
We’ve got some ideas. Take a squiz at our list of recycling ideas, and squeeze a bit more life from that mobile!
1. Use it as an iPod
It has all the functionality of an iPod Touch, so just ditch the Sim card and pretend that you only bought it for its musical skills.
2. Hollow it out and use it as a cigarette holder
It’s roughly the right size and shape to hold six cigarettes and you know it slips neatly into a breast pocket. Just remove the gubbins inside and attach two small hinges. Not a fan of tobacco? It’ll work with the SuperSmoker too.
3. Use it as an address book
Apple’s address book app is the best there is, so why not mount it permanently on your desk and use it as a fancy digital Rolodex.
4. Recycle it
Oxfam doesn’t usually accept electrical goods, but it has a special program for mobile phones, so just drop in to your local branch. Use maps on your iPhone to locate it.
5. Donate it to a 3rd world country
The UN is helping even the poorest African villages get mobile coverage and we suspect they don’t all have local Apple stores.
6. Use it as an external drive for your MacBook Air
The Air doesn’t have much room for memory, so another 8GB could be very useful.
7. Use it as a digital photo frame
Prop it up by your bed, select photos and run a slideshow. Not even the best photo frames offer touch screen scrolling yet.
8. Read it like an eBook
This was always a nice little app for those tediously delayed train journeys. Load up War and Peace if you’re crossing London in rush hour.
9. Let the kids play with it
With no sharp edges or poisonous, chokey attachments, it’s suitable for the child of all ages. Just remember to remove the Sim card first.
10. Sell it online
First-gen iPhones are currently changing hands for around £150 on eBay , or £136 at Phone4Cash.
