Sony’s not just pushing the PlayStation 3 and its new movie store as the ultimate way to grab entertainment from the web, it says a whopping 90% of its products will be able to hop online by 2011.
It’s part of CEO Howard Stringer’s plan to squeeze Sony’s content divisions for all they’re worth, and will see the PlayStation network extended to PCs, Blu-Ray players, Walkmans and Sony Ericsson phones.
The first step will be to let Bravia TVs tap into the network using Sony’s Bravia Internet Video Link.
Even better, the whole system is being built using Marlin, an open digital rights management platform, co-developed by Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Philips and Intertrust. That could mean equipment from other manufacturers can also grab films, TV and music from the PlayStation network.
“We will embrace open standards to improve interoperability among all of our customers’ devices,” Stringer said. About time too!
