iPhone: coming to a treadmill near you soon?Apple’s tie up with Nike is about to take a giant leap forward, with a range of new treadmills and exercise machines heading to gyms, complete with iPod docks to record work-outs and sync them to the web.

An announcement by American gym company 24 Hour Fitness says “Nike and Apple worked with major gym equipment manufacturers to make their cardio equipment Nike + iPod compatible so gym members can easily track and record workouts on cardio equipment like treadmills, stair steppers, elliptical trainers and stationary bikes.”

It’s reportedly launching next month, coinciding with the launch of Apple’s iPhone 3G and the all-important App Store.

We already know Apple’s prepped a remote control app, but is there also an exercise tracker in the works? This screenshot from a recent Apple patent seems to suggest so. Keep it here for more as soon as we hear it.
