We’re waiting patiently for the iPhone and iPod touch App Store, and now we know at least one of the first add-ons that’ll be available, in the shape of official software from Apple! Read on to find out what it is…
The leak comes buried in the Read Me file for a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7, sent to developers last night, and simply states: “use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.”
So there you have it - the first app available for the iPhone and iPod touch will be a remote control for your Mac or PC running iTunes.
All of a sudden, it makes sense. Apple already sells the Airport Express base station, complete with outputs for speakers, but without a remote control, there’s no way to change tracks without dashing from room to room. This will make iTunes the hub of a low-cost multi-room audio system, and we simply can’t wait.

Wasn’t Apple’s flight simulator the first iPhone app? Or Sega’s Monkey Balls or whatever it’s called? And if it’s leaked, where can I download it? Or do you mean the news was leaked? But wasn’t the news about Monkey Balls released first? And how do we know this remote is the first app? Maybe another app will be officially released before it in July.
