All the firms in the Symbian FoundationNokia’s announced it’ll be transforming Symbian into a single operating system, with the creation of the Symbian Foundation this morning.

It means Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Motorola will finally use the same operating system, opening up tons of new applications and making developers extremely happy.

The move will see every firm that currently uses Symbian pool their knowledge, creating a single operating system, instead of the multiple variants currently in use.

It’ll also mean that developers no longer need to tailor their applications for Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola or Samsung phones. All handsets will run the same software, so one application can be instantly available to billions of users.

With an audience set to dwarf that of Apple’s iPhone, and open source abilities to rival Google Android, Symbian could be set to become the de facto mobile operating system after all. Stay tuned for more as we hear it.
